Expanded PP Packaging – The Super lightweight and Eco-Friendly Solution

Expanded PP Packaging – The Super lightweight and Eco-Friendly Solution

Limiting the use of fossil-based polymers is a global concern. Among many innovations in recycling and biodegradable plastics, one of the less obvious but no less important solutions is minimizing product weight through foaming. This solution can help companies reach their sustainability goals while meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

The Science Behind Foaming: Physical vs Chemical

Foaming can be achieved through two primary methods. Physical foaming typically involves dissolving a gas, such as nitrogen (N₂) or carbon dioxide (CO₂), into a polymer melt.  In contrast, chemical foaming relies on gas formation through the decomposition of a chemical blowing agent. Those processes create a cellular structure within the material, effectively reducing its density while maintaining structural integrity. MPP Group has chosen to adopt physical foaming using nitrogen in its production process.

The Many Benefits of Expanded Packaging

The adoption of foamed packaging brings a host of advantages that extend beyond the reduction in plastic usage. By decreasing the overall mass of packaging materials, companies can significantly reduce transportation costs, a major factor in the environmental impact as well.

Another benefit of foamed packaging is its thermal insulation properties that some of them possess. In certain applications, particularly in maintaining the temperature of food and beverages, this characteristic is particularly useful.

MPP Group's SustainaPPack Tray: Part of a Green Product Line

As part of our strategic initiative to develop a comprehensive green product line, we have introduced the SustainaPPack super lightweight tray. This innovative product showcases the company's commitment to sustainability and technical expertise in packaging design. The SustainaPPack tray is created from mono polypropylene (PP), positioning it as a recyclable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional foamed polystyrene (PS) trays.

The advantages of SustainaPPack

The SustainaPPack tray offers several advantages that set it apart. It is fully recyclable in common PP recycling streams, facilitating its integration into existing waste management systems. It has enhanced insulation properties, making it an excellent choice for hot and cold food applications. The foaming process employed in the production of SustainaPPack results in a 10% to 30% weight reduction.  The cumulative effect of these results in a significant reduction of carbon footprint ranging from 10% to 30%.

Showcasing Innovation: MPP Group at the Fachpack Exhibition

Industry professionals will have the opportunity to experience our SustainaPPack tray and other packaging solutions firsthand at the upcoming Fachpack exhibition in Germany, the European trade fair for packaging, technology, and processing. The event is scheduled from September 24-26, 2024, and will be held in Nuremberg, Germany. Our associates from MPP Group will be waiting for you in Hall 3, Booth 3-528.
